Prof WONG Tien Yin, Founding Head and Chair Professor from Tsinghua Medicine of the Tsinghua University, Beijing, China, visited the Department of Ophthalmology and Visual Sciences (DOVS), The Chinese University of Hong Kong (CUHK) on 21 March 2023 and conducted the CUHK Grand Round cum Advances in Ophthalmology (AinO) series lecture, entitled ‶Digital Innovation in Ophthalmology: Crossing the Valley of Death″.
At the lecture, Prof Wong shared his insights on the potential for digital innovation to transform healthcare and how will digital technology be applied in medicine to meet future challenges in healthcare. He elaborated on a few ophthalmic case studies, including the telemedicine and artificial intelligence for diabetic retinopathy screening, the virtual eye clinic, and the nurse-led eye injection programme.
Prof Clement CY THAM, Chairman of the Department, extended a warm welcome to Prof Wong and other visitors from Beijing Tongren Hospital and Zhongshan Ophthalmic Center on their visit to DOVS. Prof Tham remarked, ‶We are honoured to have this much anticipated lecture by Prof Wong at the Department. This lecture is a valuable opportunity to learn about Prof Wong′s insightful thinking on digital innovation in ophthalmology.″
Over 150 participants physically and virtually attended Prof Wong′s lecture, which was the first physical meeting of the CUHK Grand Round and AinO series lecture held at the Department since the pandemic outbreak. The lecture was moderated by the Department′s Associate Professor Dr Mårten E BRELÉN and joined by discussants Prof Guy LJ CHEN, Dr Carol YL CHEUNG, Dr Mary HO, Dr Aziz KW KAM, Dr Shaheeda MOHAMED, Dr Simon KH SZETO, Dr TSANG Chi Wai, and Dr Mary WONG.
On concluding the lecture, Prof Tham expressed his wish to have solid collaboration between CUHK DOVS and the Tsinghua Medicine of Tsinghua University.
Prof Calvin CP PANG thanked Prof Wong for the upfront exchange of ideas with DOVS students and colleagues during his visit, and said ‶We look forward to more frequent exchanges with Prof Wong, his team, and Tsinghua Medicine in the near future.″
The AinO series lecture is regularly conducted at the CUHK Grand Round, with presentations covering clinical trials, advances in disease detection, novel treatment modes, and new technologies. Prominent international speakers and local experts are invited to present this lecture.
Prof Wong′s visit to DOVS was joined by the Professor of Beijing Tongren Hospital, Prof WANG Yaxing, along with the Associate Professor Dr ZHENG Yingfeng, the Statistician Dr YE Jinguo, and the Assistant Professor Dr LI Fei from Zhongshan Ophthalmic Center. They also toured the Department′s laboratories and the CUHK Eye Centre to better understand the work of DOVS.
