Message from the Chairman

The Department of Ophthalmology & Visual Sciences of the Chinese University of Hong Kong (CUHK) was the first academic ophthalmology department in Hong Kong, with Prof Mark OM TSO as our Founding Chairman in 1994. Prof Mark OM TSO was succeeded by Prof Dennis SC LAM as Chairman in 1998, and then by Prof Calvin CP PANG from 2012 to 2015.
Our Department consists of two main functional units: the CUHK Eye Centre and the CUHK Ophthalmic Laboratory, as the ophthalmology arm and visual sciences arm of the department, respectively.
The CUHK Eye Centre includes the CUHK-HKEH Private Eye Clinic which provides subspecialty-based clinical ophthalmic care to the public, the CUHK-HKEH Clinical Drug Trial Centre which is the only clinical ophthalmic research facility in Hong Kong accredited by the National Medical Products Administration (NMPA) in China, the Pao So Kok Macular Disease Treatment and Research Centre, and the Lam Kin Chung. Jet King-Shing Ho Glaucoma Treatment and Research Centre.
The CUHK Ophthalmic Laboratory includes the Lim Por-yen Eye Genetics Research Centre, The CUHK Ophthalmic Microsurgical Training Centre, as well as the clinical and visual sciences research laboratories and facilities of the Department. The Lee Wing Kit Advanced Ophthalmic Training and Education Centre (AOTEC), officially opened at Hong Kong Eye Hospital in 2012, raises the standard of our ophthalmic training and education to world class.
We have been working closely with Shantou University / CUHK Joint Shantou International Eye Center (JSIEC) since its inauguration in 2002, in the advancements of ophthalmic services, research, training, education, and community services in the Chaoshan area and regions beyond.
In 2021, we have completed two 3-year programmes in collaboration with the Hong Kong Jockey Club: the CUHK Jockey Club Children′s Eye Care Programme and the CUHK Jockey Club Ophthalmic Microsurgical Training Programme. Currently, we are conducting the CUHK Jockey Club Myopia Prevention Programme, with the aim of reducing myopia and its complications in Hong Kong.
Also in 2021, we commenced clinical ophthalmic services and research at the newly established CUHK Medical Centre and the Hong Kong Children′s Hospital, while maintaining our clinical service commitments at the Hong Kong Eye Hospital, Prince of Wales Hospital, and Alice Ho Miu Ling Nethersole Hospital.
We endeavor to achieve international excellence in clinical ophthalmology and the visual sciences. Over the past decade, through concerted professional and academic efforts of our Department and affiliated institutions, Hong Kong has become a regional hub for advanced ophthalmic clinical services, research, training and education.
