Prof LIN Hao Tian Lectures On Smartphone-based Self-screening for Ophthalmic Diseases

Prof LIN Hao Tian, Director of Zhongshan Ophthalmic Center and the Department of Genetics and Biological Informatics, Zhongshan School of Medicine, Sun Yat-sen University visited the Department of Ophthalmology and Visual Sciences (DOVS), The Chinese University of Hong Kong (CUHK) on February 1, 2024 and conducted the CUHK Grand Round cum Advances in Ophthalmology (AinO) series lecture, titled “Smartphone-based Self-screening for Ophthalmic Diseases.”

Prof Clement CY THAM, Chairman of the Department, warmly welcomed Prof Lin to DOVS and expressed his honor in having him deliver the lecture. Prof Tham stated, “We are honored to have Prof Lin deliver this lecture. It provides a valuable opportunity to learn about Prof Lin and his team’s insightful work on smartphone-based technology for ophthalmic disease management.” Prof Tham also expressed his desire for a strong collaboration between CUHK DOVS and the Zhongshan Ophthalmic Center.

During the lecture, Prof Lin shared valuable insights on the potential of smartphone-based technology to transform healthcare. He discussed the application of smartphone-based technology in addressing current unmet needs and future challenges in healthcare. Prof Lin elaborated on smartphone-based self-screening for age-related cataracts and visual impairment in young children. He also emphasized the importance of privacy protection and data sharing in smartphone-based technology applications.

The lecture was moderated by Dr Carol YL CHEUNG, Associate Professor from DOVS. Following the lecture, a fruitful discussion took place among Prof Lin, Prof Tham, Prof Calvin CP PANG, S H Ho Research Professor of Visual Sciences from DOVS, and Prof Hunter KL YUEN, Clinical Professors (Honorary) from DOVS, who served as panel discussants.

The lecture was attended by over 140 participants, both in-person and virtually. Prof HE Ming Guang, Chair Professor of Experimental Ophthalmology at The Hong Kong Polytechnic University, also joined the lecture in person and shared valuable insights.

The AinO series lecture is a regular feature of the CUHK Grand Round, where presentations cover clinical trials, advances in disease detection, novel treatment modes, and new technologies. Distinguished international speakers and experts are invited to deliver these lectures.

In addition to the lecture, Prof Lin also had a meeting with our research team and took a tour of the Department’s laboratories and the CUHK Eye Centre. The interaction between Prof Lin and our team led to a fruitful exchange of ideas and thoughts.
