Hooray! The CUHK Eye Catchers obtained two group titles at the Asia-Pacific Academy of Ophthalmology (APAO) Fundraising Run – the Highest Mileage Group and the Top Fundraising Group – at the APAO 2023 Congress in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia. The CUHK Eye Catchers have run 575 km in total, and raised US$818 for this charitable event. The donations will be channelled into a special school for the blind and low-vision students in southern Malaysia and to support the APAO Young Ophthalmologist activities.
Prof Clement CY THAM, Chairman of the Department of Ophthalmology and Visual Sciences (DOVS), and Prof Carmen KM CHAN, Honorary Clinical Professor, initiated the team. It was joined by other DOVS members, including Dr Jason CS YAM, Dr Vanissa WS CHOW, Dr Simon KH SZETO, Dr ZHANG Xiujuan, Dr Emma A RAN, Dr Kenneth KH LAI and Dr Fatema Mohamed Ali Abdulla ALJUFAIRI.
In addition to the two group titles, three female CUHK Eye Catchers, including Dr Emma A RAN (1st place – 148 km), Prof Carmen KM CHAN (2nd place – 57 km) and Dr ZHANG Xiujuan (3rd place – 55 km), have topped the mileage record of individual female runners, while Prof Clement CY THAM came third (178 km) in the mileage record of individual male runners.
The APAO Fundraising Run was held from 25 January to 25 February 2023. After registration, participants recorded their running and walking distance anytime and anywhere via a mobile application. The APAO 2023 Congress participants also ran and walked in the KLCC Park in the city centre of Kuala Lumpur during the Congress period.
