The Joint Shantou International Eye Center of Shantou University and The Chinese University of Hong Kong (JSIEC) and The Chinese University of Hong Kong-Shenzhen (CUHK-Shenzhen) School of Medicine (CUHK-Shenzhen Med) jointly held the Unveiling Ceremony of the Clinical Teaching Base of CUHK-Shenzhen at JSIEC on 8 March 2023.  The establishment of the Clinical Teaching Base of CUHK-Shenzhen at JSIEC marked a new chapter of strategic collaboration between the Department of Ophthalmology and Visual Sciences (DOVS) of CUHK, the Shantou University Medical College and the CUHK-Shenzhen Med, nurturing medical talents in the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area.

Prof Calvin CP PANG, S. H. Ho Research Professor of Visual Sciences of DOVS, CUHK, and Director of JSIEC, remarked, ‶The establishment of the Clinical Teaching Base of CUHK-Shenzhen at JSIEC is a concerted effort of JSIEC and the CUHK-Shenzhen Med for long-term strategic cooperation in various tasks including clinical teaching, medical education, advancements of clinical services and upfront scientific research.  Our collaboration will be beneficial to medical talents in Hong Kong, Guangdong Province and regions beyond.  This is an extremely impactful development of JSIEC and CUHK-Shenzhen.″

Prof Pang also spoke on behalf of Prof Clement CY THAM, Chairman and S. H. Ho Professor of Ophthalmology and Visual Sciences of DOVS, CUHK, and Deputy Director of JSIEC, on Prof Tham’s best wishes to the Shantou University Medical College and the CUHK-Shenzhen Med for the successful and rewarding collaboration with JSIEC and DOVS, CUHK in the future.

Prof Davy CHENG, Founding Dean and Presidential Chair Professor of CUHK-Shenzhen Med, said, ‶We are thrilled to have JSIEC to become a new member of the Clinical Teaching Base of CUHK-Shenzhen.  The Clinical Training Base will be developed under the principle of long-term collaboration, resources sharing, and co-development.  I am confident that the collaboration between the CUHK-Shenzhen Med and JSIEC will spearhead medical education, research, and clinical services in the Greater Bay Area.″

Prof TAN Xuerui, Dean of Shantou University Medical College, said, ‶JSIEC is a specialist hospital that integrates clinical service, research, education, and blindness prevention programmes.  The Shantou University Medical College will fully support the Clinical Teaching Base at JSIEC.  We look forward to more collaboration opportunities between three universities, namely CUHK, CUHK-Shenzhen and the Shantou University.″
