Dr Jason CS YAM, Associate Professor of the Department of Ophthalmology and Visual Sciences (DOVS), The Chinese University of Hong Kong (CUHK), delivered a mini-lecture for over 250 secondary students at the CUHK Programme Taster Fair on 1 April 2023. During the one-hour mini-lecture, entitled ‶Children eye care: Protection of children’s vision for their bright future″, Dr Yam gave an overview of common children’s eye diseases in Hong Kong, and shared tips and knowledge on maintaining good visual health.
Dr Yam, Director of CUHK Jockey Club Myopia Prevention Programme, also took the opportunity at the mini-lecture to share his work at the community eye care programmes and to inspire the attending secondary students to contribute to the community. He emphasised that an ophthalmologist’s mission went far beyond helping patients with eye care. Every bit of the community work significantly impacted patients and their families.
The CUHK Jockey Club Myopia Prevention Programme, launched in 2021, is a new phase of the children’s eye care programme initiated by CUHK DOVS, following the CUHK Hong Kong Children Eye Care Programme from 2015 to 2017 and the CUHK Jockey Club Children’s Eye Care Programme from 2018 to 2021. The CUHK Jockey Club Myopia Prevention Programme provides free and comprehensive eye examinations for children of ethnic minorities, with special educational needs and from low-income families. The children’s eye care programmes organised by CUHK DOVS have provided free eye examinations for over 40,000 children since 2015.
