Dr Carol YL CHEUNG receives CUHK Strategic Partnership Award for Research Collaboration

We are delighted that our Associate Professor, Dr Carol YL CHEUNG, has obtained The Chinese University of Hong Kong (CUHK)’s Strategic Partnership Award for Research Collaboration (SPARC).  The Award is set up to seed new collaborative research projects in CUHK’s strategic research areas with its priority partners.  Dr Cheung was awarded for her collaboration with the University College London (UCL), UK, on the project “Using advanced deep learning-based image-to-image translation techniques to assess diabetic macular ischemia on fundus photographs”.

Diabetic macular ischemia (DMI) is a major cause of irreversible visual loss among individuals with diabetes.  Dr Cheung and her research team conduct research on using optical coherence tomography angiography (OCT-A) to study DMI.  The Award will further deepen the collaboration with Prof Sobha SIVAPRASAD, Professor and Consultant at Moorfields Eye Hospital and UCL, UK, with an aim to develop a deep-learning model with state-of-the-art imaging and AI techniques to assess DMI.

The SPARC award was established in 2021 as part of the CUHK’s global engagement effort to support research projects in the four strategic research areas of CUHK, namely China Tradition and Modernity; Innovative Biomedicine; Information and Automation Technology; and Environment and Sustainability.  The awarded research projects will be conducted in collaboration with global priority partners.
