Prof ZHANG Xiulan lectures on MIGS in Angle-Closure Glaucoma

Prof ZHANG Xiulan, Professor of Ophthalmology from Zhongshan Ophthalmic Center, Sun Yat-sen University, Guangzhou, China, visited the Department of Ophthalmology and Visual Sciences (DOVS), The Chinese University of Hong Kong (CUHK) on 20 July 2023 and conducted the CUHK Grand Round cum Advances in Ophthalmology (AinO) series lecture, titled “Minimally Invasive Glaucoma Surgery (MIGS) in Angle-Closure Glaucoma”.

Prof Zhang’s lecture focused on the potential of applying minimally invasive glaucoma surgery for the treatment of angle-closure glaucoma. Moderated by the Department’s Assistant Professor Dr Poemen PM CHAN, Prof Zhang gave valuable insights into the latest trends and development in surgical treatment for this type of glaucoma. Panel Discussants Prof Clement CY THAM, Dr Noel CY CHAN, Dr Chukai HUANG, Dr Mandy WONG, Dr Isabel SW LAI, Dr Claire CHOW and Dr Jolly Tsui also exchanged ideas with Prof Zhang about handling various cases of angle-closure glaucoma. The lecture was well-attended, with over 140 participants joining both in person and virtually.

Prof Zhang has been devoted to clinical practice, teaching, and research of ophthalmology for 30 years and is the incumbent Principal Investigator of the State Key Laboratory of Ophthalmology in China. Prof Zhang and her research team primarily focus on glaucoma research, the application of artificial intelligence in making diagnoses, the role of brain cognition in glaucoma, and the influence of gut microbiota and immunity on its pathogenesis.

The AinO series lecture is regularly conducted at the CUHK Grand Round, with presentations covering clinical trials, advances in disease detection, novel treatment modes, and new technologies. Prominent international speakers and local experts are invited to present this lecture.

Before the lecture, Prof Zhang and her research team members Dr LI Fei, Dr SONG Yunhe and Dr LIN Fengbin, visited the Department’s ophthalmic research laboratories and the CUHK Eye Centre and had fruitful exchanges with staff and students at CUHK DOVS.
