The Guests of Honour were Mr Henry HL FAN, SBS, JP, Chairman of the Hospital Authority, and Dr the Honourable KO Wing-man, GBS, JP, Member of the Executive Council.

This ceremony aimed to recognize and celebrate the accomplishments of the programme and the contributions made by various individuals and organizations in promoting children’s eye health.
Prof Clement CY THAM, Chairman of the Department of Ophthalmology and Visual Sciences (DOVS) and Chairman of CUHK JC MPP’s Board of Directors, delivered welcoming remarks highlighting the programme’s key achievements. “Since its establishment in 2015, the CUHK JC MPP has been providing free and comprehensive eye examinations to over 40,000 children. The programme’s Phase 3, initiated in 2021, has successfully reached out to more than 1,600 children from ethnic minorities and over 6,000 underprivileged children and children with Special Education Needs (SEN).” Prof THAM emphasized the importance of early detection and treatment of eye diseases and stressed the significance of public education involving parents, teachers, and social workers to create a collective awareness of various eye diseases.

Mr Henry HL FAN, SBS, JP, expressed his recognition of the programme’s efforts in safeguarding children’s eye health. He emphasized the importance of early interventions in identifying potential eye diseases and providing timely treatment. He also shared his personal experience, stating that if such programs were available during his childhood, he might have avoided developing bad reading habit that led to myopia.

Dr the Honourable KO Wing-man, GBS, JP, acknowledged the programme’s positive impact on children with special education needs. Dr KO also expressed his gratitude for the united effort made by the DOVS, Hong Kong Jockey Club, and other supporting organizations, including individual volunteers, for their contributions.
Dr Jason CS YAM, Associate Professor of the Department and Director of CUHK JC MPP, summarized the programme’s results. “Since 2015, the programme has conducted 540 children’s eye screening days, offering free and comprehensive eye examinations for children on weekends. Additionally, we have organized 423 public educational talks, benefiting 40,000 families. The programme’s success is attributed to the combined efforts of over 100 ophthalmologists, 1,000 eye care ambassadors and volunteers, 600 medical students, 100 nursing students, and 4,100 secondary school student ambassadors.” He further added that the CUHK JC MPP has contributed valuable research data, with over 70 articles published in renowned research publications such as “Lancet Global Health” and “JAMA Network Open”. Moreover, the programme has received recognition through awards, including the CUHK Outstanding Research Impact Award (ORIA) 2022/23 and the Geneva International Exhibition of Inventions 2022.

The CUHK Jockey Club Myopia Prevention Programme (CUHK JC MPP) is an initiative by the DOVS and is funded by the Hong Kong Jockey Club Charities Trust. The programme focuses on six main areas of work, including charitable eye clinic, children eye care education, children eye care ambassador programme, outreach services, community partnership, society integration and public engagement, and the epidemiological database.

During the awards ceremony, participants in the programme, including ophthalmologists, eye care ambassadors, student ambassadors, volunteers, secondary schools, and organizations were recognized and presented with awards and appreciation certificates for their valuable contributions to the success of the CUHK Jockey Club Myopia Prevention Programme.
