CUHK Hong Kong Children Eye Care Programme Bestowed The 9th Hong Kong Volunteer Award

We are exceedingly honoured to receive the 9th Hong Kong Volunteer Award from the Agency of Volunteer Service on 1st of November 2021 at the Hong Kong Convention and Exhibition Centre. Since 2005, the Agency of Volunteer Service gives this award to up to 10 persons or teams biyearly to recognize their outstanding contributions to serve the needy of the society of Hong Kong. We are truly honoured for the award, and our profound gratitude to Dean Francis Chan and CUHK for the nomination!

We are thankful and feel greatly privileged that in the past seven years and over more than 450 weekends, we have provided free and comprehensive eye service to more than 30,000 children and their families; helped them to understand eye care, and prescribed 3,000 pairs of free glasses to children in need. We have organized more than 300 children eye care education workshops for over 30,000 parents, 2,000 teachers, and 600 social workers. We have conducted about 1,000 outreach visits to families, primary schools and NGOs. We have also organized two public education campaigns, CUHK Jockey Club Children’s Eye Care Programme Fun Day, in a shopping mall in Ma On Shan in 2019 and 2021. A huge amount of data concerning eye care has been collected. Important and new information on ophthalmic conditions has been published in more than 30 international publications.

We are deeply grateful to the dedications of our eye care ambassadors including more than 120 eye doctors from the public and private sectors, 20 nurses and optometrists, 500 medical students, 100 nursing students, 2,200 secondary school students, and 630 volunteer workers. The participation of 40 partner NGOs and 45 partner secondary schools have also contributed enormously to the Programme.

We are immensely grateful for the tremendous support and generous donation of various parties, including Hong Kong Jockey Club Charities Trust, UBS Optimus Foundation, Centaline Charity Fund, Children’s Cancer Foundation, and individual donors. We are overwhelmed by their passion and generosity.

In the coming three years, we shall further our work on eye care, in particular myopia prevention, and expand our service to children and families of ethnic minorities, children with special education needs, and low-income families. Let’s join hands to protect the vision of our new generations, and help them to see their bright future!
