We are excited to announce that our postgraduate and undergraduate students Ms WANG Yuyao, Ms ZHANG Shuyi, Ms TONG Yan, Mr Ebenezer ZAABAAR, Ms Erica SHING and Mr Vincent LC YUEN, have received Travel Grant Awards from The Association for Research in Vision and Ophthalmology (ARVO) which took place from 5-9 May 2024 in Seattle of Washington, USA.
The Travel Grant Award recognizes the outstanding research efforts of research students and their valuable contributions to the vision and ophthalmology research community. As recipients, they had their meeting registration fees and partial travel stipend covered, allowing them to actively participate in the annual congress. During ARVO 2024, these young elites engaged with other ARVO participants and leaders in their fields from around the world and received encouragement to continue their research. Among them:
- Ms WANG Yuyao, a third-year PhD student supervised by Prof Guy LJ CHEN, co-supervised by Dr Jason CS YAM, and Dr ZHANG Xiujuan. She presented a paper, entitled ″Genome-Wide Association Study in Chinese Children Identifies Novel Loci for Refraction″.
- Ms ZHANG Shuyi, a second-year PhD student supervised by Dr Carol YL CHEUNG, co-supervised by Dr Simon KH SZETO. She presented a paper, entitled ″Using a Deep Learning-based OCT Image Analysis for Diabetic Macular Edema Identification to Support Triage Screening: A Prospective Study″. Shuyi also had the opportunity to moderate a poster session on ″Novel Approaches in Imaging, Processing, and Analysis″.
- Ms TONG Yan, a second-year PhD student from Dr CHU Wai Kit′s research team. She presented a paper, entitled ″The Deficiency of Growth Hormone Releasing Hormone Receptor (GHRHR) promotes retinal ganglion cell survival in experimental optic neuropathies via the Inhibition of Ferroptosis″. Yan also actively engaged in the Axon Regeneration Multi-Omics Consortium.
- Mr Ebenezer ZAABAAR, a second-year PhD student supervised by Prof Guy LJ CHEN, Dr Jason CS YAM, and Dr ZHANG Xiujuan. He presented a poster, entitled ″Evaluation of Shared Genetic Variants for Refraction and Axial Length in Children: a Cross-sectional and Longitudinal Study″.
- Ms Erica SHING, a second-year MPhil student supervised by Dr Jason CS YAM, co-supervised by Prof Guy LJ CHEN. She presented a poster, entitled ″The Association between Parental Smoking and Astigmatism in Children″.
- Mr Vincent LC YUEN, a final-year medical student Dr Jason CS YAM′s research team, co-supervised by Dr ZHANG Xiujuan. He presented a poster, entitled ″The Effects of Physical Activity and Inactivity on Retinal Vessel Caliber of Children: The Hong Kong Children Eye Study″.
