We are delighted to announce that our PhD student Mr XU Jianming has been awarded the title of ″Scientific Scholar 2024″, while two other PhD students, Ms ZHENG Chunwen and Ms GAO Yuelan, have been awarded ″Certificate of Merit″ under the David Sung Memorial Scholarship in Ophthalmology (Scientific Scholarship) 2024.

The David Sung Memorial Scholarship in Ophthalmology (Scientific Scholarship) was established by Professor Joseph JY SUNG and his family in memory of Prof SUNG′s beloved father, Mr David SUNG, to recognize the outstanding research achievements of PhD students in DOVS.

The criteria used in selecting the scholarship winners include the evidence of research excellence in science (clinical and basic) from 1 September 2023 to 31 August 2024, and the candidate′s potential to become an outstanding scientist. After a thorough assessment of the research performance track records and the oral presentations by the three finalists on 2 November 2024, the Selection Committee, comprising Prof Joseph SY SUNG, Prof Clement CY THAM and Prof Guy LJ CHEN, has recommended awarding Mr XU Jianming the title of ″Scientific Scholar 2024″ and Ms ZHENG Chunwen and Ms GAO Yuelan the ″Certificate of Merit″.

Mr XU Jianming, the recipient of the ″Scientific Scholar 2024″, said ″I extend my heartfelt gratitude to each of you in the DOVS family for your invaluable support throughout my preparation for the scholarship. Particularly, I am grateful to Prof Clement CY THAM and Prof Calvin CP PANG for fostering a research environment where innovation and collaboration thrive, and to my supervisor, Prof Guy LJ CHEN, and to my co-supervisors, Prof Clement CY THAM and Prof Jason CS YAM, for their instrumental mentorship in my growth. This recognition reflects the collective effort of our entire team, and I am honored to work alongside such dedicated and supportive colleagues. In the future, I am committed to advancing ophthalmology and contributing to our department′s continued success.″

Ms ZHENG Chunwen, the recipient of the ″Certificate of Merit″, said ″Many thanks to all Professors, colleagues, and administrators in the DOVS. I am also truly thankful to Prof Joseph JY SUNG, Prof Clement CY THAM, Prof Calvin CP PANG, and Prof Guy LJ CHEN for awarding me this award. My thanks also go to my supervisor, Dr Carol YL CHEUNG, for her invaluable guidance and support in exploring new avenues in my studies. It is my great honor to be a part of DOVS, and I am committed to upholding the high standards that our department represents.″

Ms GAO Yuelan, the recipient of the ″Certificate of Merit″, said ″I am deeply grateful for the award, and I feel very fortunate to have joined the DOVS family and to be working alongside all of professors, colleagues, and administrators in research. I am particularly grateful to my supervisor, Prof Guy LJ CHEN, and my co-supervisor, Prof Jason CS YAM, for their unwavering support, continuous encouragement, and invaluable guidance throughout my studies.
