CUHK Ophthalmology visited the JSIEC team on cataract operations and training in Xinjiang

For many years JSIEC (Shantou University / The Chinese University of Hong Kong Joint Shantou international Eye Center) has been sending ophthalmic teams to distant areas of mainland China to conduct cataract surgeries for the local community and to train up local doctors on microsurgery skills and management. In July 2017, a JSIEC team of ophthalmologists and nurses, led by Dr CHEN Weiqi, Associate Director, work in collaboration with Lifeline Express, in a Lifeline Express Eye-Train in the Kizilsu Kirghiz Autonomous Prefecture in Xinjiang. More than 1,000 cataract surgeries have been performed. They also provided microsurgery trainings to local doctors and nurses. On 18th July, Prof Calvin CP PANG, Director of JSIEC, went to visit them and to obtain reports from JSIEC and LifeLine Express teams. Dr Jason CS YAM, Dr CHU Wai Kit, Dr WANG Yumeng and Dr SUN Zihan joined him for the visit. It was wonderful experience of the CUHK colleagues to learn about community ophthalmic service and training conducted in remote parts of China. The excellent work of JSIEC and Lifeline Express colleagues were greatly appreciated.
