Mr Herbert YH HUI, our Medicine (MBChB) Programme Global Physician-Leadership Stream (GPS) Year 4 student has received the ″Innovation & Technology Scholarship 2023″ for his work at the Department of Ophthalmology and Visual Sciences.
Herbert has worked under the supervision of Dr Carol YL CHEUNG for four years, focusing on the detection of Alzheimer′s Disease with retinal imaging and artificial intelligence. His work recently culminated in a publication in the Journal of Alzheimer′s Disease, titled ″Deep Reinforcement Learning-Based Retinal Imaging in Alzheimer′s Disease: Potential and Perspectives″ . The scholarship provides Herbert with an enriching opportunity to extend his research exposure at the Duke Eye Center and Moorfield Eye Hospital, achieving a comprehensive overview of the ophthalmology practices in different healthcare systems and recognising clinical gaps in the translation of the algorithm for practical use.
Established in 2011, the Innovation & Technology Scholarship is a joint initiative by the Innovation and Technology Commission of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Government, HSBC, and the Hong Kong Federation of Youth Groups. Each awardee receives an exchange allowance of HK$150,000 along with diverse opportunities, allowing them to widen their international exposure, gain industry experience, and nurture their passion and commitment toward science and technology.
