The Department is very delighted to share that our three postgraduate students received the awards from the David Sung Memorial Scholarship in Ophthalmology Scientific Scholarship 2020.

David Sung Memorial Scholarship in Ophthalmology Scientific Scholarship was set up by Professor Joseph JY SUNG and family in memory of Prof SUNG’s beloved father, Mr. David SUNG, to recognize excellent research achievement for PhD students of DOVS.

The award selection this year is based on evidence of research excellence in science (clinical and basic) from 1st September 2019 to 31st August 2020, and the potential to become an outstanding scientist. After full assessment of the track records and oral presentation from the applicants, the Selection Committee, including Prof Joseph SUNG, Prof Clement CY THAM and Dr Guy LJ CHEN, has determined to award Ms CHEN Zhenji as “Scientific Scholar 2020”, and award Ms TANG Ziqi and Mr ZHANG Yuzhou as “Certificate of Merit”.

Dr Guy LJ CHEN, the Head of Graduate Division, says “Heartiest congratulations to Zhenji, Ziqi & Yuzhou for your achievements! Please keep up the good work, and I wish you every success in your life and career ahead. Also, I would like to thank all applicants for their efforts in ophthalmic research. I would look forward to reviewing your work next year. Moreover, I would like to thank Prof Joseph Sung and his family for their generous support and setting up this scholarship for our students. This is a great encouragement and recognition to them in their academic performance and striving for excellence.”

Zhenji, the recipient of the recipient of “Scientific Scholar”, says “I am greatly honored to receive the award the David Sung Memorial Scholarship in Ophthalmology Scientific Scholarship. Many thanks to Prof Sung, Prof Tham and Dr Chen for awarding me this scholarship. I want to express my profound gratitude to Prof Sung and his family for their support in the postgraduate education and research work in DOVS. My thanks also go to all professors and colleagues for all their help and support. In particular, I would like to thank Prof THAM, Prof PANG, Dr CHEN, Pancy, and Shiyao for their tremendous support and guidance in my projects and study in the past year, and the years to come.
I will continue to work hard and improve myself to be a better scientific researcher in ophthalmic genetics.”

Ziqi, the recipient of “Certificate of Merit”, says “I am deeply grateful for the award and sincerely appreciate Prof SUNG, Prof THAM and Dr CHEN for giving me such a great opportunity. I am also indebted to all professors and colleagues in the Department for their kindness and help in my work. My particular gratitude to Prof Carol CHEUNG, Dr. Fangyao TANG, Dr. Anran RAN, Zihan, Dawei and all team members for all their support and mentorship. I shall keep learning for delivering impactful academic outputs in the future.”

Yuzhou, the recipient of “Certificate of Merit”, says “I greatly appreciate to receive the award. Sincere thanks to Prof SUNG, Prof THAM and Dr CHEN for awarding me the certificate! Thank all professors and colleagues for your support.
