Biography
Dr Szeto graduated from the Medicine Programme (MBChB) at the Faculty of Medicine of The Chinese University of Hong Kong (CU Medicine) in 2012, earning several academic awards and scholarships. He completed his ophthalmology training at the Hong Kong Eye Hospital (HKEH) and received the CUHK-HKEH Retina Subspecialty Fellowship. In 2021, he obtained a Master’s degree in Epidemiology and Biostatistics (MSc) from the CUHK School of Public Health.
A specialist in ophthalmology, Dr. Szeto focuses his clinical practice and research on vitreoretinal and macular diseases. His scholarly contributions encompass a broad range of publications on innovative surgical techniques and equipment for macular hole repair and submacular hemorrhage displacement surgery, as well as studies on diabetic retinopathy, diabetic macular edema, and retinal imaging.
Dr Szeto has contributed to 37 papers in international peer-reviewed journals and 3 book chapters. As first or corresponding author, his articles have been published in leading ophthalmology journals such as Progress in Retinal and Eye Research, Ophthalmology Retina, British Journal of Ophthalmology, Acta Ophthalmologica, Retina and Ophthalmologica.
Beyond his clinical and research work, he actively promotes professional knowledge and skill transfer. He is the vice-director of the CUHK ophthalmic microsurgical training programme and leads the resident teaching rounds at Hong Kong Eye Hospital, where the diagnosis and management of complex retinal, macular, and uveitis cases are discussed. He also raises public awareness of retina and macular diseases in Hong Kong through media appearances and educational events.
Dr Szeto holds several positions within international academic ophthalmology organizations, serving on the editorial board of Scientific Reports and as a council member of the Asia-Pacific Ocular Imaging Society. He regularly presents invited lectures at international ophthalmology conferences, including meetings held by the Asia-Pacific Academy of Ophthalmology, Asia-Pacific Vitreo-Retina Society, and Asia-Pacific Ocular Imaging Society. Locally, he is a council member of the Hong Kong Ophthalmological Society and editorial board member of the Hong Kong Journal of Ophthalmology. His contributions have been acknowledged by the Distinguished Young Fellow award from the Hong Kong Academy of Medicine in 2024 and the Bronze Medal from the Asia-Pacific Vitreo-Retina Society Leadership Development Programme in 2023.
