Our medical student received the “Best Scientific Paper Award” from the 33rd Asia-Pacific Academy of Ophthalmology Congress

Victor T.T. CHAN, our year-4 MBChB-GPS student, wins the “Best Scientific Paper Award” at the 33rd Asia-Pacific Academy of Ophthalmology (APAO) Congress for his abstract “Retinal Neuronal Loss in Alzheimer’s Disease: A Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis”. Victor is the only awardee in the sub-specialty “ocular imaging”. “We were very encouraged to see that our medical student could win this award among many competitors who are ophthalmologists or postgraduate scientists.” commented by Professor Tham.

Supervised by our faculty member Dr. Carol Cheung, co-supervised by Professor Vincent Mok (Chief of Neurology), Victor is currently a core investigator of the research project “using retinal imaging to study Alzheimer’s Disease”, which aims to translate and apply the retinal imaging measures as biomarkers for Alzheimer’s Disease. “The retina is an extension of the central nervous system and offers a unique “window” to study pathological changes of Alzheimer’s Disease in the brain. Studying the retinal changes in Alzheimer’s Disease could improve our understanding of the disease and, potentially, aid in diagnosis and risk assessment”, commented by Dr Cheung.

Congratulations, Victor!
