Congratulations to Joint Shantou International Eye Center of Shantou University and The Chinese University of Hong Kong for publishing their landmark papers in JAMA Network Open, Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences of the United States of America, and Nature Communications.

In the first paper (https://jamanetwork.com/journals/jamanetworkopen/fullarticle/2779454), Wang et al identified and classified multidimensional retinopathy of prematurity (ROP) pathological lesions in retinal images with high accuracy using a deep learning platform.  This could be suitable for routine ROP screening in general and children’s hospitals to provide hope for improving the care of children with the most risk of blindness.

Cen at al published the 4th of our PNAS series (https://www.pnas.org/content/118/28/e1920834118) on the ophthalmological effects of antagonists and agonists of the Growth Hormone Releasing Hormone-Growth Hormone-Insulin Growth Factor 1 (GHRH-IGF1) axis. These findings demonstrated the therapeutic potential of GHRH agonist for the protection of retinal ganglion cells against optic neuropathies, including glaucoma, the world’s most common cause of irreversible blindness.

In the last paper (https://www.nature.com/articles/s41467-021-25138-w), Cen et al established a deep learning platform with high sensitivity and specificity for the detection of 39 fundus diseases and conditions. This platform could be useful for retinal fundus disease screening and triage, especially in remote areas worldwide.
