The Joint Shantou International Eye Centre (JSIEC), Shantou University and the Chinese University of Hong Kong, and the Department of Ophthalmology and Visual Sciences (DOVS), CUHK, jointly hosted the Inauguration Ceremony of the new East Coast Division of JSIEC on 27 July 2024 in Shantou. This event celebrated an important milestone in the development of ophthalmology and visual sciences in southern China.
The new East Coast Division of JSIEC is a key construction project under Shantou′s Three-Year Action Plan for High-Quality Healthcare Development (2024-2026). Spanning a total floor area of 57,000 square metres and with more than 200 eye doctors, this modern two-tower complex will serve up to 1 million outpatients annually.
In addition to the ophthalmic patient services, the complex will house an Advanced Ophthalmic Research Centre. This will provide state-of-the-art facilities for JSIEC research staff and international collaborators to advance ophthalmology through clinical services, teaching, and scientific research.
The Inaugaral Ceremony was graced by the presence of distinguished guests, including Mr WEN Zhanbin, Secretary of the CPC Shantou Municipal Committee (汕頭市委書記), Prof HAO Zhifeng, Chancellor of Shantou University, Ms LIN Man, Vice Chairman of the Standing Committee of Shantou People′s Congress (汕頭市人大常委會副主任), Mr LI Zhao, Vice Mayor of Shantou Government (汕頭市人民政府副市長), Mr CHEN Zetao, Vice Director of Coordination Department of Liaison Office, Prof YAO Ke, Chairman of Ophthalmology Branch of Chinese Medical Association and Director of Zhejiang University Eye Hospital, Prof Enders KW NG, Associate Dean (Alumni Affairs) of the CUHK School of Medicine, Prof Dennis SC LAM, Former Director of JSIEC, Mr CHEN Chuqun, Deputy Party Secretary of the Medical College of Shantou University, Dr Frieda MK LAW, Consultant of Li Ka Shing Foundation at Shantou University Medical College, Prof JIAN Ge, top scientist of National 973 Project and Honorary Chairman of Ophthalmology Branch of Chinese Medical Association, Prof JIA Qu, Director of the State Key Laboratory of Optometry and Visual Science and Vice Chairman of Ophthalmology Branch of Chinese Medical Association, and Ms YANG Zeng, Associate Dean of Shantou University Medical College. The inauguration ceremony was hosted by Prof ZHANG Mingzhi, Honorary Professor and Vice-Director (Executive) of JSIEC.
″We are delighted to unveil this remarkable new hospital complex and affirm our commitment to provide world-class eye care to the people of Shantou and the surrounding area,″ said Prof Calvin CP PANG, Director of JSIEC. In his welcoming remarks, he expressed his gratitude to the government, the Li Ka Shing Foundation and the community for their tremendous support, and he is confident that the JSIEC will continue to deliver excellent patient service and advancement of ophthamic research.
Prof Clement CY THAM, Chairman of DOVS and Associate Director of JSIEC, said the East Coast Division will enable JSIEC to achieve even greater successes in high quality patient service and advanced scientific research, ″The DOVS will continue to support the development of JSIEC to sustain its position as a leading eye care institution in China with high international reputation.″
Prof HAO Zhifeng, President of Shantou University, added ″The East Coast Division will enhance our ′one hospital and two districts′ concept and help us offer better education and training for future medical professionals,” He guaranteed Shantou University will continue to support JSIEC to boost its competitiveness and make lasting contributions nationally and globally.″
Prof Enders KW NG also expressed his confidence that the joint efforts of Shantou University and CUHK will allow JSIEC to make even greater contributions to the development of national health.
Following the ceremony, guests were taken on a comprehensive tour of the East Coast Division, where they could explore the new hospital complex firsthand. The Symposium of High-Quality Development in Ophthalmology was also held right after, enabling participants to engage with one another and further their knowledge and expertise.
