DOVS Supports Brain Health Screening with AI In Po Leung Kuk Community Project

The Department of Ophthalmology and Visual Sciences (DOVS) at The Chinese University of Hong Kong (CUHK) is honoured to contribute retinal image-based AI technology to support a meaningful community initiative on the prevention of dementia led by Po Leung Kuk. The project officially launched at a kick-off ceremony on 15 July 2025.

Prof Carol YL CHEUNG, Professor, DOVS, presented the scientific background underlying this innovative technology. The CUHK research team also demonstrated how retinal image analysis with AI can be applied to support brain health assessment among the elderly.

Prof Vincent CT MOK, Mok Hing Yiu Professor of Medicine, Department of Medicine and Therapeutics, CUHK, remarked that Alzheimer’s disease, a major cause of dementia, often lacks early symptoms, making early identification especially important.

With the support of Mr Timothy CHAN, Chief Executive Officer of Po Leung Kuk, the ceremony was attended by Dr the Honourable KO Wing Man, GBS, JP, the Venerable Kuan Yun, and Dr the Honourable LAM Ching Choi, GBS, JP, Prof Owen KO HO, Assistant Dean (Research), Faculty of Medicine, and Mr Arthur KC SHEK.

DOVS is committed to advancing public health and promoting wellness in the community.

Prof Carol YL CHEUNG shared recent research work on the development of the world’s first AI model using retinal fundus photographs alone to screen for Alzheimer’s dementia and brain health.
