The Department of Ophthalmology and Visual Sciences (DOVS) at The Chinese University of Hong Kong (CUHK) is honoured to have actively participated in the International Symposium of Ophthalmology (ISO) 2025, held from 25 to 27 April 2025 at the Shantou International Convention & Exhibition Centre in Shantou, China. Our department took on various roles, including serving as chairs and speakers in multiple sessions and contributed to the event’s success.
Initiated by the CUHK and co-organised by the Beijing Association for Science and Health (北京醫學科學健康學會) with the Joint Shantou International Eye Centre (JSIEC), the ISO has been a prominent event for 15 years, promoting global ophthalmic knowledge and promoting international collaboration, establishing itself as one of the most significant ophthalmology conferences in the Asia-Pacific region. This year, the ISO 2025 brought together ophthalmologists and visual scientists worldwide, including the United Kingdom, France, India, and China, to exchange innovative ideas and discuss future opportunities and challenges in advancing ophthalmology and visual sciences.
The event was supported by notable guests, including Prof TANG Rui, Party Committee Secretary of Shantou University (汕頭大學黨委書記), Mr LI Zhao, Vice Chairman of the Standing Committee of Shantou People′s Congress (汕頭市人大常委會副主任), Prof HU Zhong, Vice President of Shantou University and Party Committee Secretary of the Medical College (汕頭大學副校長、醫學院黨委書記), Mr LIU Siwei, Secretary of the Party General Branch of JSIEC (汕頭大學-香港中文大學聯合汕頭國際眼科中心黨總支書記), and Dr Frieda MK LAW, Consultant of Li Ka Shing Foundation at Shantou University Medical College (李嘉誠基金會駐汕頭大學醫學院顧問).
During the opening ceremony, Prof Calvin CP PANG, S. H. Ho Research Professor of Visual Sciences, Director of JSIEC, Chair of ISO 2025, delivered a welcome speech, expressing his hope for enhanced international collaboration and improved public health outcomes.
Prof Clement CY THAM, our Department Chairman, Deputy Director of the JSIEC, Chair of ISO 2025, emphasised the importance of knowledge sharing in advancing the field of ophthalmology. He encouraged experts to engage in collaborative discussions to foster understanding and consensus.
Our DOVS Faculty Members, Honorary Professors, postdoc fellows and students presented various topics at the conference, showcasing their research and expertise. This occasion provided a valuable platform for networking and collaboration, and we anticipate significant advancements in ophthalmology and public health arising from these international exchanges.
