DOVS Faculty Members Share Insights At 2024 Boston BIT-ARC Research Symposium

A delegation from The Chinese University of Hong Kong (CUHK) Department of Ophthalmology and Visual Sciences (DOVS) was invited to participate in the 2024 Boston University Biomedical Innovation Technologies Affinity Research Collaboratives (BIT-ARC) Research Symposium on 12 November 2024. The delegation included Dr Carol YL CHEUNG, Associate Professor, Dr Julia YY CHAN, Assistant Professor, Dr CHU Wai Kit, Research Assistant Professor, and Dr Gabriel D YANG, Postdoctoral Fellow. This symposium highlighted the cutting-edge research and collaborative spirit of CUHK′s DOVS, reinforcing their commitment to advancing vision science and improving disease diagnosis and treatment.

At the Symposium, Dr Cheung delivered a keynote lecture titled ″Translating Artificial Intelligence-related Retinal Image Research from ″Concept″ to ″Implementation″ for Timely Disease Management and Treatment″. Her presentation received high praise and sparked in-depth discussions among attendees.

In addition to her keynote, Dr Cheung delivered a guest lecture entitled ″Deep Leaning for Diabetic Retinal Diseases: Where are we? What is next?″ to the members of the Department of Ophthalmology at Boston University School of Medicine. She highlighted the impact of medical AI on the detection and screening of diabetic retinal diseases and discussed how to address the remaining challenges.

Dr Chu also presented a guest lecture titled ″Targeting multiple pathways to protect RGC″, discussing the potential of modulating neuropathways and extra-retinal tissues for glaucoma treatment.

Dr Chan delivered a lecture on the global outcomes of osteo-odonto-keratoprosthesis as well as the 17-year long term results from Hong Kong. The lecture sparked innovative discussions over how corneal blindness can be better managed from a clinical perspective.

Their participation was supported by the Wing Tat Lee Award, which aims to foster collaborations between Boston University′s Chobanian & Avedisian School of Medicine and Chinese universities, particularly those in Hong Kong. With this support, Prof Andrew J TAYLOR from Boston University will collaborate with Dr Chu on uveitis and vision science research.
