Following 36 years of distinguished service,  Prof CHEN Weiqi, former Vice Director of The Joint Shantou International Eye Centre (JSIEC) has retired from his position and been appointed to a new role as Chief Expert in Fundus Medicine. A grand ceremony was held on 26 February 2025, attended by hospital executives, staff representatives and students. Mr LIU Siwei, Secretary of the Party, General Branch of JSIEC and Dr Frieda MK LAW, Advisor to the Li Ka Shing Foundation at Shantou University Medical College also attended the ceremony.

During the ceremony, Prof Chen reflected on his remarkable 36-year journey with the JSIEC, expressing gratitude to past leaders, colleagues, and institutions that supported his professional growth. He acknowledged the significant advancements in China’s ophthalmology field and the rapid development of JSIEC, emphasizing his pride in the accomplishments of younger doctors.

Prof ZHANG Mingzhi, Executive Vice Director of JSIEC, thanked Prof Chen for his unwavering dedication to patient care and mentorship, highlighting his role in fostering a talented team in fundus specialty.

Prof Calvin CP PANG, Director of JSIEC, further recognized Prof Chen as a cornerstone of the hospital’s development, praising his sincere and humble work ethic. Prof Pang described Prof Chen as a mentor and friend to colleagues, embodying the spirit of dedication and excellence.

As Prof Chen embarks on this new chapter, we extend our heartfelt congratulations on his retirement and wish him continued success as Chief Expert in Fundus Specialty, where we trust he will make significant contributions to the hospital’s mission and further its achievements.
