Prof FAN Xian Qun’s Academic Visit To DOVS

Prof FAN Xian Qun (范先群院士), the Academician of the Chinese Academy of Engineering (中國工程院 CAE), Vice President of Shanghai Jiao Tong University (上海交通大學副校長), Chancellor of Shanghai Jiao Tong University School of Medicine (SJTU SoM,上海交通大學醫學院院長) , visited the Department of Ophthalmology and Visual Sciences (DOVS), The Chinese University of Hong Kong (CUHK), from 18 to 21 June 2024.

During his visit, Prof FAN delivered two insightful lectures and signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) with the Faculty of Medicine, The CUHK. This visit programme has strengthened the academic partnership between CUHK, SJTU and CAE, the highest honorary and advisory academic institution in the nation′s fields of engineering sciences and technology, paving the way for future cooperation and continued development of teaching and research among the institutes.

Prof Fan is a world-renowned ophthalmologist and a major pioneer in orbital surgery and interventional treatment of ocular tumors in China. This visit was supported by the CUHK- Chinese Academy of Engineering (CAE) Academicians Visit Programme Funding Scheme 中國工程院院士訪校資助計劃, which aims to bolster the academic excellence of the University through strengthening its collaboration with CAE.

Prof Fan delivered 2 lectures with DOVS, titled ″Engineering meets Ophthalmology″ and ″Ocular Oncology Development in China″, respectively. In the first lecture, Prof Fan shared his expertise on the integration of engineering and ophthalmology especially in oculoplastic and orbital diseases, exploring new research directions in this field; while in the second lecture, he focused on the future of ocular oncology in Mainland and how ophthalmologists and academicians can prepare for its evolution.

The first lecture was moderated by Dr Kelvin KL CHONG, Associate Professor of DOVS, and Prof Hunter KL YUEN, Deputy Hospital Chief Executive of Hong Kong Eye Hospital. They also joined hands with Dr Emily FY YEUNG, President of the College of Ophthalmologists of Hong Kong (COHK) and Dr Emmy YM LI, President of the Hong Kong Ophthalmological Society (HKOS) to moderate the second lecture during the Joint Annual General Meeting (AGM) of the COHK and HKOS. Rewarding interactions followed and led to a fruitful exchange of ideas and thoughts among practising ophthalmologists, trainees and students.

In addition, Prof Fan also visited the CUHK Main Campus, the CUHK Medical Centre, our Department′s facilities including the CUHK Eye Centre, laboratories, and Ophthalmic Microsurgical Training Centre, fostering meaningful interactions and exchanges.
