Our Department aims to provide subspecialty training and enhancement (clinical and / or laboratory) of high international standard to up-and-coming ophthalmologists, from overseas or mainland China. On the other hand, the programme intends to foster professional ties and collaboration among The Chinese University of Hong Kong (CUHK) / Hong Kong Eye Hospital (HKEH) / Prince of Wales Hospital (PWH), and ophthalmology departments and institutes, overseas or in mainland China, sharing the same vision of advancement through pursuance of excellence.
- Applicants should be under the age of 45, and have completed a residency in general ophthalmology;
- Preference will be given to individuals who have completed a full subspecialty fellowship programme and have a strong track record in research and publication;
- Applicants must be able to communicate in fluent written and spoken English.
- The standard programme is one year in duration
- Programmes of other durations can be approved on a case-by-case basis
- Fellows will NOT be charged course / tuition fees by CUHK, HKEH or PWH;
- No salary or financial support will be provided by CUHK, HKEH or PWH;
- Each fellow is responsible for his / her own fees for training visa and limited medical registration (clinical fellows only), unless these are covered by scholarship (see below);
- Fellows planning for clinical attachments are required to subscribe to medical malpractice insurance to cover the duration of attachment (depending on the level of clinical experience), unless this is covered by scholarship.
- Scholarships for the CUHK-HKEH-PWH International Ophthalmology Fellowships are subject to the availability of funding;
- Scholarships are provided by CUHK / HKEH / PWH, in conjunction with charitable foundations and / or professional organizations;
- Application for Scholarship is on a competitive basis. Approval for a CUHK-HKEH-PWH International Ophthalmology Fellowship does not imply the granting of Scholarship;
- Each scholarship may cover one or some of the following items:
- One return air ticket to and from Hong Kong (Economy class)
- Free accommodation during the period of Fellowship
- Application fees for Limited Registration and medical malpractice insurance
- Applicants should apply directly to the Programme Director of the CUHK-HKEH-PWH International Ophthalmology Fellowship Programme;
- A cover letter, a completed Application form, and a full curriculum vitae in English should be submitted;
- The names and correspondence address and e-mail of 2 referees should be supplied.
- Confidential references will be sought for short-listed candidates;
- Interview(s) will be arranged for all short-listed candidates, either at a mutually-convenient location or through internet;
- Selection criteria include good references from supervisors / mentors, and a track record that demonstrates academic potential, excellent abilities, and the dedication and commitment to excel;
- Commencement of the Fellowship is subject to the granting of training visa and limited medical registration by the relevant local authorities. Training visa is required for all individuals participating in this fellowship programme who are not Hong Kong residents. Limited medical registration is required for overseas doctors planning to undertake clinical fellowships in Hong Kong, but not for individuals planning for non-clinical, laboratory fellowships. CUHK-HKEH-PWH will assist in the applications, but cannot guarantee the outcomes. Please allow around 10 months for the processing of such applications.
