Asia-Pacific Academy of Ophthalmology Congress 2017 (APAO Congress 2017)

The Asia-Pacific Academy of Ophthalmology Congress 2017was held in Singapore 1st– 5thMarch 2017.Our faculty members served in different capacities, Professor Clement CY Tham as Co-Chair of the Congress, Professor Calvin Pang as Convener of Visual Sciences, Professor Christopher Leung as Secretary of Ocular imaging, and Dr Jason Yam as Secretary of Pediatric Ophthalmology & Strabismus). They and our faculty members Dr Kelvin Chong, Dr Marten Brelen, Dr Danny Ng, Dr Michael Ng and Dr Wai Kit Chu also chaired sessions, presented talks and gave instruction courses.

Prof Clement Tham
Prof Tham, our Chairman and theSecretary General and CEO of APAO, gave a welcome speech for APAO Leadership Development Program 2017-18 Orientation Class. He was theChairof “ICO-AAO Joint Symposium: Safety in the Clinic and Operating Room—Improving Patient Care and Staying Out of Trouble” and “Industry-Sponsored Symposium: Final Answer — Dos and Don’ts in Glaucoma Case Management”. As aninvited speaker, he presented on topics including “Surgical Treatment for Primary Angle Closure Glaucoma”, “Leadership Development and the APAO”, “Goniosynechialysis for PACG”, “How to Manage Closed Angle Glaucoma” and “Is Clear Lens Extraction Safe and Effective for Primary Angle Closure Glaucoma?”.

Prof Calvin Pang
Prof Pang was theChairof “APSEG Symposium: Update on Eye Genetics”. As aninvited speaker, he delivered two talks, entitled “Genetics of Myopia” and “Genetic Risk Factors of High Myopia”.

Prof Christopher Leung
Prof Leung was theChairof three symposia – “Emerging Ocular Imaging Technologies: From Bench to Bedside”, “Glaucoma Imaging: Structure, Function” and “Industry-Sponsored Symposium: Introduction and Clinical Applications of Swept Source OCT for Diabetic Retinopathy and Glaucoma”. As aninvited speaker, he delivered several talks including “Two-Photon Metabolic Imaging of Retinal Ganglion Cells”, “Latest Developments in Ocular Imaging for Detection of Glaucoma”, “Advances of Swept-Source Optical Coherence Tomography for Evaluation of Glaucoma Patients”, “Progressive RNFL Thinning and Prediction of VF Progression” and “Future Role of Minimally Invasive Therapy”.

Dr Kelvin Chong
Dr Chong was theChairof the symposium “Emerging Orbital Diseases”. As aninvited speaker, he presented on topics “Endoscopic Approach to Medial and Floor Decompression” and “Idiopathic Orbital Inflammation in Adults: Emerging Trend”.  He was also aCo-instructorfor the instruction courses of “Small Incision Ptosis Surgery” and “Small Incision Medial Epicanthoplasty”.

Dr Mårten Brelén
Dr Brelén was invited to give presentations on “Measurement of Foveal Avascular Zone Using OCT-A as a Predictor for Treatment Outcomes” and “Uveal Melanoma in the Asia-Pacific: An Overview”.

Dr Jason Yam
Dr Yam was theChairof “Common Problems in Pediatric Ophthalmology”. He also chaired the instruction course and presented on “Surgical Management of Intermittent Exotropia”.

 

Dr Danny Ng
Asinvited speaker, Dr Ng presented on topics including “Diagnosis and Management of Intermediate Uveitis”, “Management of Inflammatory Complications of Vitreoretinal Surgery” and “OCT Angiography for Subretinal Hyperreflective Material in Pathologic Myopia”. He also presented on “Classification of Exudative Age-Related Macular Degeneration with Pachyvessels on En Face Swept Source Optical Coherence Tomography”.

Dr Li Jia Chen

Dr Chen was theChairof “Rapid Fire Visual Sciences Update Session” and “APSEG Symposium: Personalized Medicine and Big Data” and presented on “Identifying New Genes for Age-Related Macular Degeneration: Candidate Gene Analysis in the Big-Data Era”.

 

Dr Michael Ng
Dr Ng was aninvited speakerand presented on “Mesenchymal Stem Cells in Ophthalmology”. He also delivered a talk on “Protective Effects of a HTRA1 Insertion-Deletion Variant Against Age-Related Macular Degeneration”.

Dr Wai Kit Chu
Dr Chu was aninvited speakerand gave a presentation on “Quantitative Real-Time Measurements in a Mouse Autoimmune Uveitis Model”.

Prof Clement Tham presented on the topic “Is Clear Lens Extraction Safe and Effective for Primary Angle Closure Glaucoma?” during the APAO Congress 2017.
