CUHK Ophthalmology provides free eye check-up to primary school children

In fact, the first 8 years of age is the most critical period for ocular development. During this critical period, children need comprehensive eye checking for common childhood eye diseases. It is very important to know that amblyopia and many other eye diseases can be effectively treated to avoid permanent visual damage, if detected before 8 years old. Therefore, early and comprehensive eye check-up is essential to maintain good ocular health.

In view of these facts, the Chinese University of Hong Kong, Department of Ophthalmology and Visual Sciences is collaborating with the Wanchai District Council, and the H.K. Aided Primary School Heads Association (Wanchai) to conduct a comprehensive eye examination program for Primary 1- Primary 3 children in the Wanchai District. This is a 3-year program, where children will have one comprehensive and free eye check-up annually. Furthermore, both parents of each child participant are also invited to take part in this program, where free and fundamental eye examination will be provided. The program’s purpose is to decrease the prevalence of common eye diseases, such as myopia and amblyopia, and to increase eye health through early prevention and intervention.
