Training Programme for Ophthalmologists
The Department of Ophthalmology and Visual Science (DOVS) Resident Programme provides in-depth and structured clinical training and education in Ophthalmology to residents, fellows, and faculty of teaching hospitals in Hong Kong and beyond. The programme emphasises interactions between the programme directors, attending ophthalmologists, faculty, fellows, and residents at all levels. The goal of the programme is to help train new ophthalmic surgeons and doctors with tools that enhance the learning experience in the pursuit of surgical excellence in Ophthalmology.
Ophthalmic Microsurgical Training Centre (OMTC) & its workshops
At the Lee Wing Kit Advanced Ophthalmic Training and Education Centre (AOTEC), we conduct our Resident Programme at an unprecedented level of hands-on learning exposure. As one of the key facilities of the AOTEC, the Ophthalmic Microsurgical Training Centre (OMTC) provides state-of-the-art training environment and facilities for general ophthalmologists and ophthalmic trainees. Its aim is to develop surgical proficiency in those who are preparing for various surgical procedures, through lecture and video presentations, virtual reality simulation and wet lab sessions.
The OMTC is staffed with renowned academics and professors from the Department of Ophthalmology and Visual Science (DOVS), The Chinese University of Hong Kong (CUHK), and specialists from the Hong Kong Eye Hospital (HKEH). With structured training programmes such as Basic Microsurgical Workshop, Phacoemulsification Workshop, and Subspecialty Microsurgical Workshops, participants gain in-depth knowledge on various ophthalmic conditions and practice their relevant surgical procedures.
The objectives of the OMTC and its Workshops are:
Introduction of ophthalmic conditions which require surgical interventions
Step-wise learning of various ophthalmic procedures
Training of stereoscopic coordination and dexterity under surgical microscopes
Management of surgical complications
Accreditation of surgeons for ophthalmic surgeries on patients
Informative lecture series and video presentations provide groundwork for specific ophthalmic conditions and their treatment strategies. The OMTC houses the virtual reality system EYESi® Ophthalmosurgical Simulator, which employs advanced computer technology to give the surgeon the feeling that he is experiencing real intraocular surgery. In the wet lab sessions, participants engage in hands-on practice, supervised by course instructors. Step-by-step approach on important intraocular maneuvers on porcine eyes reinforces eye-hand-feet coordination and dexterity.
At the end of the workshops, assessments based on paper quizzes and practical tests are carried out to ensure surgical competency of the surgeons. Certificates from the OMTC and DOVS, CUHK are awarded upon completion.
